Environmental Projects - Annual Underwater Lake Cleanups
Resources, guidance and financial assistance is available to affiliated Alberta clubs or member groups who endeavor to operate an environmental project to enhance the underwater environment. Valid projects include lake and river clean-ups, dive site improvements or heritage interpretation. Most of the yearly AUC Dive Alberta Events include an underwater lake clean-up component in addition to some fun dives or are totally dedicated underwater lake cleanups in their own right, i.e. Banff Lake Cleanup, Sylvan Lake Cleanup.
So far, a combined estimate of over 16 tons of garbage (and counting) has been removed by volunteers from all over the province just from the waters of the popular Sylvan Lake since 2002.
With your help, as of 2011, a combined estimate of over 35 tons of garbage has been removed by scuba divers & shore volunteers from all over the province from the lake waters of Alberta since the early seventies when awareness of environmental issues started to be enthasiastically embraced by many in Alberta's scuba community. It's not "out of sight, out of mind" to an Alberta scuba diver who sees it as a reminder of the impact of irresponsible human activities on our underwater environment & the wildlife that live there.
Alberta scuba divers "give back to our environment" by proudly participating in the annual AUC Dive Alberta events & U/W Lake Cleanups. The unique opportunity of removing unwanted trash, broken glass, plastics, & other inappropiate signs of human activities while scuba diving in Alberta's sparkling, popular & busy lakes (like Sylvan Lake) or in our beautiful, famous mountain park lakes (Banff, Jasper & Waterton) rewards our local participating divers, shore volunteers & paddlers with a very satisfying & mission driven experience!
